U.S. gives V.I. extra $138,000 for emergency programs

ST. THOMAS - Local programs that offer emergency food, shelter and temporary assistance to those in need have been awarded an extra $138,000 from the federal government.

The money comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and is a supplement to the annual allotment already received.

The federal government had already boosted its funding for emergency food and shelter programs this year, giving the Virgin Islands $279,300 in February, which was about $67,000 more than the previous year.

Local government or private voluntary agencies can apply for the funds. In order to qualify, organizations must be a governmental program or be a nonprofit - voluntary groups must have a voluntary board - have an accounting system, practice non-discrimination and have demonstrated the ability to deliver food and shelter programs. Applicants also must be eligible to receive federal funding.

The money will go to community organizations that help people who are struggling to make ends meet. This includes all types of people, from homeless to middle-income families who may need temporary assistance.

Local nonprofit agencies and churches that offer aid, food or shelter to the public can apply for a piece of the 2009 allotment through the United Way offices.

The local United Way office helps administer the program, but the decision about which agency gets funding is made by a board that usually meets once a year. The Emergency Food and Shelter board is made up of representatives from the Salvation Army, United Way, American Red Cross and Catholic Charities, as well as community members and government officials.

Once an agency has been approved to receive a portion of the funding, the money is released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency directly to the recipient.

Applications may be picked up on St. Thomas at the United Way office at Nisky Center and on St. Croix at the Lutheran Social Services office in Frederiksted. The application deadline is May 15.
