Your United Way Helping to Build a Brighter Tomorrow The Virgin Islands Daily News, Monday, September 17, 2007 By SEAN McCOY
Daily News Photo by SEAN McCOY St. Thomas-St. John United Way fundraising campaign co-chairs ST. THOMAS - Many programs that provide vital services - such as educating youth, combating homelessness and providing legal advocacy or assistance to the disabled or elderly - will have a good chance at receiving funding thanks to the United Way in the Virgin Islands. The United Way successfully launched its 2008 fund raising drive on Saturday morning with a breakfast at The Ritz-Carlton. People leisurely dolled out huge sums of money over eggs and French toast while sipping coffee and looking out at the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. In the first couple hours of its yearlong drive, the United Way received $215,300 in pledges. Organizers have set a goal of $800,000 for the 2008 pledge drive. The United Way received $690,000 in pledges in 2007. "This is by far one of the best kickoffs we've had, due to our community support and friends of the United Way," said Cheryl George-Chance, United Way of St. Thomas & St. John president. "Contributions that go toward member agencies are well used." Among the largest donations that came at the breakfast were $25,000 from Redhead Management and $10,000 each from Dudley, Topper and Feurzeig, LLP, International Capital & Management Co. and the West Indian Co. Through the year, hundreds of other corporate and individual sponsors will build gradually toward the goal. "I will focus on finding those who want to contribute but have not had an opportunity to give in the past," George-Chance said. "That is the avenue to our goal." The highest individual contributors are inducted into the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, which provides an opportunity for people of substantial means to affirm their dedication to the community. Al and Margaret Cohen, Howard Hulsman and Joe Papa all pledged at least $10,000 to the United Way for 2008. Mary Gleason and Simon Caines, the 2008 Campaign co-chairs, were passed a symbolic torch by 2007 co-chairs Alicia Boatwright and Ermin Boschulte before beginning the pledge drive. "This is fun. I kind of like standing here and taking money," Gleason joked as the pledges came rolling in. Anyone who would like to donate to the United Way can call 774-3185 or visit the website www.unitedway.vi. Volunteers are also critical for carrying out the mission of the United Way. "United Way would not exist without its many volunteers," George-Chance said. "Many, many thanks for your support." Care enough about your community to give. |
