Your United Way Helping to Build a Brighter Tomorrow PRESS RELEASE - July 12, 2006 United Way Salutes Thyra HammondThe Board of Directors of the United Way of St. Thomas-St. John recently accepted the resignation of Thyra Hammond who has served as its Executive Director since 1988. “After 18 years of leading the organization, I have decided it is time to begin another chapter in my life,” said Thyra Hammond. “My tenure as Executive Director has been the most rewarding and challenging experience of my career.” According to Adosha Francis, President of the Board of Directors, United Way of St. Thomas-St. John has become an example to other chapters in United Way International of how the organization should function as a result of Thyra’s steadfast leadership. “Her dedication, professionalism and tireless work are second to none. We wish her the very best as she explores this new phase of her life,” she said. Under Ms. Hammond’s stewardship, United Way of St. Thomas-St. John has endured two devastating hurricanes (Hugo and Marilyn) while increasing their goal from $400,000 to $800,000. “No small accomplishment,” said Francis. “Thyra has a unique combination of skills, tact and charm that have endeared her to every Board of Directors for which she has served. We will truly miss her.” “We have already formed a Search Committee and will explore all qualified candidates, locally and nationally,” explained President Adosha Francis. I am confident that the transition will be seamless.” For more information on United Way and the agencies it supports, visit United Way’s website www.unitedway.vi.
