Two hundred runners take part in
United Way Walk and Fun Run By MICHAEL POTTER, Daily News Staff ST. THOMAS Nearly 200 people traveled two miles along Veterans Drive on Sunday to raise money to help others. The crowd of men, women and children participated in the United Way Walk and Fun Run on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront from the Coast Guard dock to Frenchtown. Luis Smith was the first runner to cross the finish line, with a time of 12:22. Aneicia Williams led the way for the women, finishing in 13:12. United Way Executive Director Thyra Hammond called the turnout the largest in the event's four-year history. All proceeds from the race benefit the United Way of St. Thomas and St. John. Participants' entry fees will help the organization in its effort to reach a $800,000 fund-raising goal this year. The United Way helps fund 16 nonprofit agencies, including the American Red Cross and the Boy and Girl Scouts of the Virgin Islands. At the end of the race, awards were given to the top three finishers among both men and women, boys and girls age 15 and under, and the top team entries. Second place in the men's division went to Roy Rogers (13:54), followed by Louis Hill (13:56) in third. Second and third place among the women went to Kristin Barton (14:34) and Kristi Severence (15:26), respectively.
