Walk-Fun-Run a Big Success for United Way
By JOY BLACKBURN, Daily News Staff
ST. THOMAS The sun was shining, the harbor was sparkling, and some 100 adults and children walked together along the, waterfront Sunday afternoon, generating an estimated $800 for -the United Way.
"We did very well. I'm really pleased about how many people came out, and everybody thought it was a lot of fun," said Thyra Hammond, executive director of the United Way of St Thomas-St. John, which sponsored the two-mile Walk-Fun-Run as part of the last leg of its annual fund-raising campaign. "And it didn't rain. It was a beautiful event"
The United Way helps support 17 local human-service agencies and still needs to raise approximately $236,000 to meet its goal of $650,000 this year, Hammond said. A flea market set for Feb. 27 and a raffle are the final two events for this fund-raising campaign, she said.
On Sunday, prizes were awarded to top finishers in both the adult and youth categories, as well as to oldest and youngest participants. Corporate and government awards went to organizations with the most employees participating.
