St. Thomas, V.I. - United Way’s seventh annual Bazaar and Flea Market held at the Emancipation Garden on February 2, 2002 had all the makings of a great event: activities, music, entertainment, great food and incredible bargains.

The annual fundraiser is the result of the hard work and collaboration of the United Way board members, volunteers, and staff and volunteers of United Way’s 17 member agencies. The board members sold previously-owned clothing, jewelry, furniture, household items, books and toys while the agencies representatives sold local foods and drinks, plants, popcorn, hamburgers, and pastries. Music and commentary were provided by emcee and board member, S. L. Caesar, children were entertained by Dimitri Ogden who shaped balloons into crowns and creatures, and masseuse Sandy Schell who massaged aching muscles. The event raised $7,284.00.

The names of the lucky winners of two raffles were drawn at the event. The proceeds of the raffles, $11,100, were also added to the United Way campaign coffers.

Special Events chair, Angelika Bakarran, and Susan Laura Lugo, 2002 Campaign chair, thanked the many volunteers and the member agencies for their time and creative talents for making this year’s event the most successful ever. Sponsors of the raffle, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Point Pleasant Resort, Secret Harbour Resort, Bolongo Beach Resort, Gourmet Gallery and Mahogany Run Golf Course, as well as the sponsors of the Limited Edition raffle, Carnival Cruise Lines and American Airlines, were commended for their generosity and civic spirit.
